EVLT (Endovenous Laser Therapy)

EVLT is similar to the VNUS Closure procedure. Under a general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic a laser fibre is passed along the vein from the knee or calf to the groin. The position of the wire is confirmed by 3D ultrasound imaging.The laser is then fired and heats the blood in the vein which destroys the inner lining of the vein. Gradually the laser fibre is withdrawn from the leg until the whole vein is destroyed. Visible veins on the surface of the leg would need to be treated by phlebectomy or injection sclerotherapy. During the procedure, you will be given a pair of special glasses to wear to protect your eyes. This is just a precaution against accidental injury by firing of laser energy outside the body.

After your EVLT procedure

You will need someone to take you home after the procedure. You will be wearing compression stockings for a week night and day and for a further week during the day time only. You can return to normal activities including work the next day. You can drive the next day but you may not feel comfortable enough for 4 days or so. You should not fly after the procedure for three weeks for short flights (up to 3 hours) and six weeks before flying long haul.You may experience bruising and soreness for 3 to 5 days after the treatment and occasionally up to 10 days. The pain is improved by walking or by taking simple analgesics such as paracetamol. The bruising usually comes out after about 4 days and you will see some skin staining. This may take several weeks to disappear. Underneath this bruising you will feel a deep cord which is the vein remnant. It is usually sore and will take about 6 to 8 weeks to disappear.

Complications

Potential complications can include vessel perforation, venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, phlebitis, bruising, infection, paraesthesia (numbness or tingling), and skin burns. Endovenous laser therapy usually treats the underlying cause of most varicose veins but you may need additional treatments. We will be able to provide any follow-up therapy for any minor cosmetic veins.Note: Although we can offer both VNUS and EVLT our experience is that VNUS offers patients less bruising, less discomfort and fewer complications with an earlier return to work and normal activity.  We will be happy to discuss your preference when we see you.
